![]() ![]() However, as the internally generated seed moduli do not always produce satisfactory results, the use of user-input seed moduli is generally encouraged. Practically all backcalculation programs provide internally generated seed moduli for backcalculation analysis. The seed moduli chosen for backcalculation analysis of multilayer flexible pavements can have significant impacts on the performance of backcalculation software and, sometimes, the final solutions of the backcalculated moduli. This paper presents a series of regression models (associated with the pavement layers), to improve the backcalculation process by giving an initial set of seed moduli that allow accounting for distress present in the structure.Seed Modulus Generation Algorithm for Backcalculation of Flexible Pavement Moduli Backcalculation performed during APT tests allowed for correction of the layer moduli associated with pavement damage due to trafficking. APT tests are consistent with this purpose since monitoring of pavement response associated with the different layers and destructive/non-destructive material analysis allows validating and calibrating the procedure. Also, shifts in the parameter values could help identify homogeneous sections. Each parameter can be related to a specific section of the structure and could improve the selection of seed moduli. ![]() In this regard, the use of the deflection parameters could benefit the procedure by providing additional information about the layer’s structural condition. These considerations make the use of the backcalculation technique limited when there is little experience. Furthermore, additional considerations include equipment calibration, the surface and pavement temperature, the available layer thickness information, or the optimization algorithm (which in general, regardless of the adjustment factor, does not guarantee a reliable result). However, this procedure requires a vast understanding of pavement engineering and materials and can be greatly biased based on selected seed moduli, incorrectly modeled material behavior, and the structural integrity of each layer. The backcalculation procedure is an essential tool in the assessment of existing pavements since is applied to obtain the existing layers’ moduli as a structural analysis parameter. ![]()
